A freelance model is someone that works independently of an agent finding their own casting calls and work opportunities. Some hopefuls opt for a path that allows for more control of their career without the support of an agency. A route that demands a committed, dedicated character that is able to take charge of their career successfully.

There are many points to consider if you are wishing to take the freelance route over to exclusively signing with an agency. Becoming a freelance model is no easy task however; take a look at the following pointers to help you navigate the male and female modelling industry.

We can help you start your freelance career, simply register with us now!

Networking Is Vital to Your Success

You will heavily rely on your own contacts made independently. Establishing connections at fashion events such as shows, exhibitions and parties is required to get yourself noticed. Such events are filled with industry experts who are always on the look out for new talent.

Get yourself noticed. Networking can be intimidating and quite nerve-wracking depending on the event and how many people you know. Going it alone actually helps, as with a friend in toe you are less likely to talk to other people. Although hugely scary, you are more likely to make more connections independently.

Do not drink too much at these parties. Treat them as work rather than a social event as you do not want to wake up the next morning embarrassed about what you said. One glass of champagne for courage is more than acceptable but keep it to just one to avoid regretful behaviour.

Pay Your Tax

It is important to pay your tax and national insurance contributions. Declaring yourself as freelance, puts the responsibility onto yourself to ensure that you have payed the correct amount of money to the tax office. Seek advice if you are unsure how to proceed with an accountant.

Make sure you start a spreadsheet documenting all the payments you have received that month and year. Freelance modelling jobs will most likely be sporadic and irregular therefore, keeping track is essential.

A freelance models salary is not conventional with a set amount earned each year as it depends on how much work you have booked, which may not be the same every month.

Be sensible and open a savings account where you can deposit a percentage of your wage each month. When the tax bill comes around you will have enough to pay it with asking for a handout or worrying.

Model jobs will either be paid as a set day rate or an hourly rate by the brand. These are not usually negotiable as their will be lots of new models looking for modelling work who will happily take your place. However, do not let this hold you back if you believe for the pay to be unfair. Set an hourly or day rate for yourself and stick to it!

It is difficult for new models to know the standard freelance model rates. Just do your research and overtime you will get a feel for how much you should be charging. This will hopefully rise the more experienced you become.

Are You Business Minded?

Without an agent to chase up invoices and negotiate terms you will be need to be savvy. Knowledge of the modeling industry, contracts and scam artist tactics is essential to avoid being conned in a world full of dodgy characters. It is vital to keep your wits about you and act cautiously. Do not be fooled by excitement and desperation, which can easily affect your judgment considerably.

Social media is a great way to promote yourself yet when work is offered via this platform act with caution. Not many companies and agencies will offer modelling gigs via a private message on Instagram or Facebook.

You Don’t Have to Pay an Agency Commission

When signed to model agencies the company will take a percentage of your salary as a reward for the collaboration. However, freelance models will not have this obligation when finding the opportunity themselves. All your hard work will be yours to keep but make sure you save a percentage to pay your tax.

Fashion models can be offered clothes as payment yet make sure that you can pay your bills and the experience will help you find work in the future before you accept. It is tempting to say yes to everything however, ensure that it is right for you and that you know your worth.

freelance-model

Would You like an Agent?

On occasions freelance models are represented by modelling agencies or even a few different organisations. However, if you accept a job that the agent has booked or arranged you will have to pay the commission to the agency.

The amount is for their part in setting up the opportunity using their contacts and networking skills. This option may be worthwhile for aspiring models in particular as they are new to the industry.

Make sure you explain the types of modelling you are happy to do and never feel forced to pose nude or topless. Decide of the niche that you would like to excel in and approach agencies that work in this area. For example, commercial modelling covers a broad range of jobs and is a little easier to break into than high fashion.

Design a Modelling Website

To promote yourself you may wish to invest in a model website, which industry professionals will use to find new talent. Most will ask for you to pay for the privilege to have your photo and statistics on the website. Use your business mind to weigh up your options to see whether the cost is beneficial to your success.

Also, designing a freelance modelling website to showcase your talent is a great way for clients to decide if you are the right model for the job. Make sure it is professional and easy to use so that future employers are impressed on first glance. Also, online platforms especially social media is the perfect way to promote your website. However, as we mentioned be very careful when communicating via Instagram or Facebook. Make sure that the person is legit before agreeing to model for them.

freelance-model

Portfolio Costs

To showcase your talent and capabilities a modelling portfolio is required. Some agencies will cover the cost however; freelance models will certainly not have this option. Therefore, save enough money to create a high standard portfolio that can be used to secure roles. Do not scrimp on this resource, as models who are freelance will rely on quality images to promote their potential.

Keep this resource updated and relevant to your goal. Finding work as a model is tough but armed with a professional portfolio you can showcase your talent and secure those roles when you feel ready. The evidence of work will definitely put you in a good position to secure freelance model jobs. Your future employer will definitely be impressed with a modelling portfolio that has had a lot of work put into it.

Your Location

Being based in a large city in Europe or further afield is a must. London, New York or Paris are creative hubs where head offices of fashion brands are based as well as a lot of model agencies. Therefore, there will be plenty of opportunities for models to pursue.

Living right in the middle of it will not only be inspirational but also keep you current. This may result in you relocating to a new city as a long commute will be difficult on top of early starts and late finishes.

Before the big move, make sure you have enough money to pay your bills and rent. Also, food it a big one too. This might mean you saving up for a while prior to relocating to London.

Are you thinking of becoming a freelancer? If you have any more questions please get in touch by commenting below.

Hair models are important within the beauty industry. Products for styling and caring for hair needs to be promoted through advertising commercials, brand imagery and campaigns.

To market their unique product a male or female model who can showcase the benefits of the hairspray, shampoo or gel will be selected. Therefore, individuals who have healthy, strong hair will succeed as the product will be promoted in the correct light and ultimately persuade consumers to purchase the item from their nearest retailer. The likes of Pantene, L’Oreal, Herbal Essences and Tresemme require hair models.

Would you like to experience what it is like to become a hair model for the day? Register with us now to find out!

Hair Model Requirements

Of course, all types of hair is required for modelling jobs depending on the product in need of advertising. Creating the perfect curls, adding volume to lifeless hair or enhancing a short, grey crop requires a model to literally show the benefits through a commercial or carefully thought out image. However, typically an individual with long, flowing locks will be picked due to their versatility.

A well-conditioned, healthy head of hair can be transformed into various styles and demonstrate how the product works easily. The brand needs for consumers to feel envious of the hair on the screen and desperately want the product to create the same look. Straight hair can be curled and styled to look shorter than reality with the help of stylists who are trained in the profession.

Looking After Your Long Hair

Hair stylists will use products and heat to create the vision of the brand, which can have a damaging affect on your locks. Having your hair pulled tight into high buns with almost a full can of hairspray to hold in place, backcombed to create volume or straightened countless times will negatively effect your hair.

Even when the shoot or show does not focus on your hair, your tresses will be styled perfectly. Imagine having multiple shows each day during fashion week and the amount of product applied to change the look. Therefore, it is up to you personally to look after your locks.

It is important to take great care of your hair to ensure that it remains conditioned and healthy. Brittle, weak hair will not transfer well through the camera lens and promote the brand positively. All types of hair colours are used in the industry creating a diverse image.

9 Fantastic Hair Care Tips

  • Ensure that you remove product from your hair at your first convenience to avoid build up and damage.
  • Wash with a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type and will add either volume or control depending on whether your locks are thick or fine. It is worthwhile seeking advice from those who are trained to know which products will enhance your locks.
  • Always apply conditioner to the ends of your hair and use shampoo just for the scalp. The shampoo will run down as you wash out but doesn’t need to be rubbed in at the ends.
  • Do not wash your hair too regularly as natural oils are beneficial and excessive water will constantly remove the oils creating dry hair. 2-3 times a week is perfect. Avoid too hot water also as it can dry out your hair. Keep the water at a warm temperature.

hair-modelling

  • After washing comb your hair carefully to avoid splitting and fighting with a knot that will cause extra damage. When brushing your hair always brush from the bottom upwards.
  • Trim your hair every 6 weeks to remove split ends and present a well-maintained mane. Always go to the hair salon for a professional cut.
  • When possible let your hair air dry rather than using a hair dryer to allow a day without heat. When you do dry your hair use a cool setting and use heat protector products.
  • Dry shampoo is perfect for going that extra day without washing your hair.
  • Always seek advice from a colour expert when dying your locks to avoid damage.

Male Models Are Hair Models Too

Hair models can be both females and males as all genders are needed to promote cosmetic products. After all, men and women both buy hair products to style their hair. Again male models will be required to present a good amount of hair over a short, shaved crop as the brand will not be able to showcase the effects of their product.

In many cases wigs or extensions may be used at a photoshoot to create more volume or length depending on the brief. Therefore, in these circumstances shorter haired models can be used if the client favours your appearance over other models.

Photoshop is also a tool used to create more body and volume into a hair shot. It may be easier for employers to use advanced technology to create the desired look rather than trying to mould a hairstyle.

It is important that models are versatile when professionals are creating their new vision. Always be easy going and enthusiastic about the style as negativity will not be perceived well.

How to Become a Hair Model

hair-modelling

  • For those who wish to become a professional hair model it is wise to look after your tresses to ensure that you are repeatedly hired for new roles. Healthy, bouncy locks will always be favoured over lifeless, brittle hair. Therefore, it is important to maintain a regime that works for your hair type.
  • Ensure that you are always open minded to the hair styling created by the artist. Do not criticise the work of a professional. Your locks will be exposed to heat and hair products therefore, it is wise to take great care of your talent. Decide before you go into the profession if you mind having your hair cut.
  • As well as modelling for brands, salons such as Toni & Guy also advertise for hair models needed for competitions and practice. These might not be paid hair modelling jobs but they do provide great experience and a free haircut. Most likely they will state the type of locks they are after such as ‘long hair models wanted.’ Becoming a hair model takes dedication and persistence as looking after your tresses is very important.
  • Those with short hair will still be hired yet it might affect your opportunities. Many supermodels do have a buzz cut. However, they have established their place in the industry and are wanted for their name and social media standing. It is very different for a new model. Curly hair model jobs do exist also, so make sure you embrace your fabulous locks.
  • As with any areas of the the fashion industry there will most likely be more jobs in London. This is due to it being a vibrant, large capital city with many hair modelling opportunities available. Models with brunette, red or blonde hair have a great chance of finding work, it might be worthwhile finding a modelling agency in a large city who can help you find new jobs including walking in fashion shows.
  • Whilst getting your hair styled you will more than likely be having your face done by a makeup artist. Photoshoots and especially fashion shows are hectic with everyone working very quickly to be finished on time. There will be a lot of new faces working hard to pull the show off, with some close up in your personal space.

What Is Foot Modelling?

It is a name for individuals who use their feet to make an income. Those who possess particularly appealing feet are hired by brands to promote their product in advertising campaigns or television commercials.

Beauty labels, shoe designers and jewellery brands are simply a few companies who will turn to feet models for support. Many models also utilise other body parts such as their hands and legs to secure more modelling work and appear diverse to a company.

Take the first step to become a body part model! Register with us today to see if you have what it takes.

A Foot Models Salary

Foot modelling is not a full time occupation and will require a resourceful individual who can juggle various jobs to nurture a successful modelling career. However, a foot models income can be quite lucrative being paid a lot per shoot. Typically, body part models can get up to £500 per shoot or more depending on the brand you work for with their annual salary reaching £90,000 per year. The amount you are paid all depends on your experience, the brand hiring you, the location and the type of work required.

Body part models can earn a substantial amount of money by modelling their feet for editorial shoots and adverts. However, it is well known that there are less modelling jobs available than hand modelling and is therefore, important to add other body parts to your CV to attract more attention.

Photoshoot Tips

Whilst at a photoshoot it is vital to give 100% to the role imagining how the final product will appear and the employer’s vision. Creating the correct pose by relaxing or tensing your toes and foot will ultimately change the way the product is viewed. Practice various poses in the mirror to find attractive positions that enhance the shape of your foot and toes.

Body parts modelling may take you around the world for location shoots such as Los Angeles, New York or Tokyo. It is an exciting aspect of the job however; it is tiring with a focus on getting the winning shot. You may be rising early and getting home late. A professional photographer won’t stop until they get the shot they need.

Take Great Care of Your Asset

It is essential to take great care of your asset by manicuring your toenails, moisturising your foot and removing dry skin. Always moisturise to keep your skin soft, supple and in good condition. A strict beauty regime is a must. Avoid wearing uncomfortable shoes and socks that may leave blisters and unwanted marks.

It has been known for professional foot models to wear shoes a size too big and they never wear pointy footwear or high heels due to the harsh and negative affect on their feet. The irony is you may be modelling designer shoes at the photoshoot however; at home it’s all about the UGGs to keep those feet in good shape.

You may even get to keep the stilettos yet cannot wear them. Keep your toenails to a neutral colour as the designer may not want a bright red or vivid blue gracing their campaign. Also, bright shades can stain your nails, which results in more work for the technical team.

foot-model

More Top Tips

Do not walk outside with bare feet to avoid cuts that will spoil the shoot. They may ruin your chances of making a good impression. Fake tan is also avoidable as it can easily go wrong, which may anger the client.

For example, body part model, Nicki Donohoe wears soft cotton gloves when sunbathing on the beach to avoid getting sunspots. Also, leg models must attend the gym to tone their thighs and calves ready for modelling jobs that require only a leg shot. Many do not sit down or cross their legs for too long as this can cause varicose veins.

Believe it or not a good diet helps. A healthy diet, which avoids alcohol, caffeine, smoking and chocolate helps keep your nails strong. Being addicted to toxic substances will make you shake during those crucial moments. A nutritious diet will keep your skin soft; circulation pumping and your feet will maintain a healthy glow.

Work Those Feet

As your feet and legs are the only body part in the shot at that time it is important for your body parts to act seductively and sexy with the use of presentation and posing. You are required to create emotions through your limbs whether it is giggly, coy or ticklish.

A lot of thought goes into how to deliver your feet in a way that conveys positively through the camera. Nice long toes, a beautiful high arch, manicured nails and silky skin is the balance to perfection. It is also essential to exercise your feet to ensure that they are flexible and gorgeous.

You may be asked to position your hands and feet in an uncomfortable way to make them look natural. However, this shape for long periods of time may hurt. The next day you may have achy feet.

Do remember that the way your body looks on camera is totally different to really life. You may think your foot is beautifully arched but in the shot it looks flat. Therefore, listen carefully to direction.

Foot modelling is a serious profession used by the likes of Nivea, Dove and Pretty Polly and requires for individuals who are open to hard work and dedicated to their feet. Those who are relaxed and do not take great care of their desired body part will not survive in a competitive industry.

You may have to make little sacrifices to your daily life to accommodate your profession. For many it is the perfect opportunity to live their dream without having to put a face to the feet.

How to Become a Foot Model

If you think you have the prettiest feet on earth and your friends always comment that they could be model material, it is time to think about your options. As we’ve explained there is a career in posing with your best body part and hand modelling agencies do exist.

Your best bet would be to get some professional foot model images and send them to a body part modelling agency. Most foot modelling agencies will have an application form that you can apply to. Make sure your feet look their best to impress the agent. The same applies for a hand model and all other features that are covered in body part modelling.

What Is Face Modelling?

It is a term referring to the beauty shots that are taken solely of your face. To promote cosmetics, large brands will hire models to appear in campaigns and product shots with a focus on facial features.

The likes of Rimmel, Max Factor and Maybelline will need to promote their new mascara, lipstick or foundation to a wide audience. Featuring these products on a models face is essential in driving sales as consumers can visually see the colour and effects the product has.

Many aspiring models will search to find out if they have the correct features to succeed in the industry.

Are you wondering if you have the face for modelling? Find out and register to UK Models!

Do You Have the Face for Modelling?

Brands will seek individuals who possess an accessible look and even features. Unfortunately, those who have striking and over powering facial features such as a large nose or protruding mouth will not succeed.

An unbalanced look will not be found suitable for the beauty industry due to the huge focus on the facial area. A commercial appearance is desired to mould into their vision with the use of their beauty products.

Features will be assessed looking for nice shapes and colouring in terms of eyes, lips, nose and contours of the face such as high cheekbones and an even jawline. It is a judgemental, harsh industry to enter as your face is criticised immensely and will most likely be altered by Photoshop before the launch date.

Photoshop in the Industry

Digital enhancement is a reality in the modelling industry and will apply to the beauty industry. A mascara that supposedly makes your eyelashes fuller and longer will probably be enhanced by false lashes and Photoshop to create the desired effect.

Essentially, it is deceiving the audience as the product doesn’t extend eyelashes as it suggests. However, Photoshopping can work in favour of the face model as when an unexpected blemish or rash appears it can be edited out.

Take Care of Your Skin

It is important to avoid unwanted spots by drinking lots of water, eating healthily and implementing a beauty regime that works for your skin tone. Do not try new products directly on your face before testing first as you could have an allergic reaction that may hinder your role.

Never apply new products the evening or day before a modelling job to be safe and do not put fake tan on your face. To ensure a glowing complexion that radiates consume a lot of water throughout the day and take your make up off every night followed by cleansing and moisturising.

Your skin will benefit hugely and ensure that your career is secured as a face model. You will be constantly prodded and poked by make up artists to build the look they visualise. It will require patience on your behalf to sit still whilst the stylists do their job.

To ensure that the look translates well through the camera lens a heavy amount will be applied and therefore, it is important that you are strict and take off the make up mask before you go to sleep.

Facial Expressions Are Vital

Beauty models will have to work with their facial features to make a particular expression. Using your eyes, mouth and position of your face is crucial in conveying various expressions.

Narrowing of the eyes, a pout of the lips and lifting your head to make a new angle can change the look of a shot immediately. It is worthwhile practicing using your face to create diverse looks so you can deliver instantly.

Close up, zoomed in shots of facial features will be captured and therefore, it will be important to learn how to pose with these body parts independently from your body. Use a mirror to see how you look when performing each pose as a guide to improve.

face-modelling

How to Get into Face Modelling?

As with all areas in the industry, young talent are advised to get signed to an agency. This is the most beneficial route to find work in the niche. Research agencies that have links with beauty brands yet do not narrow your search. A lot of different designers require models with an accessible face to promote their designs.

We recommend that you keep your options open to gain as much experience as possible. Look for an agency with a good reputation and who will proactively seek suitable roles. Once signed you will start to receive calls for castings and interviews with hopefully positive results.

Face Modelling for Magazines

The fashion modelling industry also highly depends upon beautiful faces to front magazines. It is extremely common for covers to focus on the facial form. Therefore, working in different areas of the industry, which may include high fashion is a way of building up your portfolio.

Landing a role where your face is on the cover of a publication is very exciting yet may not be a regular occurrence. Therefore, it is important to look for other roles to maintain a regular income and steady work.

TV Commercials for Beauty Brands

Modelling commercials for cosmetic brands are also very popular in the beauty industry. Moving and performing in front of a camera is vital to make the ad a success. Again, close ups of applying mascara, lipstick or moisturiser is required to promote the product.

Listen to direction and make sure that you appear natural and confident on screen. It may require some practice. For example, opening your eyes too wide may make you look startled or parting your lips too much might appear too provocative for the brand.

Think about how you naturally perform these actions to be relaxed. It is harder than it looks as the setting is far from normal with a room full of people and a camera pointing towards you. However, this is the secret of a good model, someone who feels at home in front of the camera and can act really well.

Pageant modelling has been a staple of American culture for many years; however, its success has found its way over the pond to the UK. Beauty contests are often for children, however, there are adult versions out there for you to get involved with.

What Is Pageant Modelling?

International beauty pageants take place all over the world, and thanks to their commercial success in the USA, they’ve become a huge deal in Britain as well. In fact, they’ve always arguably existed here in some respects, with a May Queen often being chosen for May Day.

In the modern sense, they are usually concerned with physical attributes such as attractiveness, but they’ve expanded to be more all-encompassing, and often have other elements. For example, contestants might be asked to display a talent (like singing or dancing), or face interview questions.

pageant modelling

International pageants for children and toddlers focus on beauty, gowns, sportswear modelling, talents, and personal interviews. Adult and teen pageants focus on makeup, hair and gowns, swimsuit modelling, as well as personal interviews – these are conducted on stage in front of everyone!

People go all out. They get extensions, they take walking classes, and choreograph everything from dances to their general posing routines and even their smiles.

Shows like Toddlers and Tiaras and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo have captured their success in mainstream media.

Why Get Into Pageant Modelling?

Beauty pageants are a lucrative business. Winners aren’t just safe in the knowledge that they won – they get real cash prizes, and sometimes these are huge. They are often crowned or given a sash, and beauty Queens are often given a title as well.

You can even win college scholarships and contracts across the modelling world to boost your career. In fact, it is great modelling experience for young people who walk the catwalk in front of a panel of judges. Pageantry is a good way of building confidence. Many finalists look for modelling jobs or for roles in the entertainment industry, especially those who have made a name for themselves after becoming Miss Universe. For some young women they are a role model who will excel in public speaking at events aimed to inspire.

The Moral Conundrum of Pageant Modelling

There are a few concerns when it comes to pageant modelling, especially where minors are involved. Children are sometimes thought to be forced into the world of beauty pageants, with many mothers being accused of living vicariously through their child.

Other opponents argue that such pageants are not empowering for young girls and lead to anxieties and insecurities. In extreme cases, it’s thought that they encourage young girls to diet or seek cosmetic surgery, often leading to body dysmorphia or eating disorders. Some pageants have now got rid of the swimsuit modelling section, after claims that this is a step too far.

On an altogether darker level, beauty pageants have even been blamed for forcing little girls to grow up too fast. They wear make up and do their hair in an extreme fashion originally intended for adults. Critics accuse organisers of helping to sexualise young children. Sadly, one little girl named JonBenet Ramsey was murdered age six – she was a pageant queen and some people argue this made her a target. Thankfully, this was an isolated incident.

Would you partake in pageant modelling? What do you think of kids who take part? Cute or creepy? Let us know!

Nude modelling, first and foremost, must only be undertaken by individuals over the age of 18. We repeat. Nude models must be aged over 18. There are laws protecting minors, and for that reasons, only adults should even consider this path.

With that said, adults are entitled to make their own decisions, but we believe they should be informed ones.

If you’re interested in glamour modelling, let us help and register today! We offer a safe environment for you to feel comfortable whilst posing for your portfolio.

The Two Types of Nude Modelling

There are two kinds of nude modelling – one is artistic for art classes, often referred to as a ‘life modelling’, and the other is a form of glamour modelling.

What Is a Life Drawing Model?

The artistic kind is one where you are less open to exploitation. For example, you will often be asked to remove your clothing for a group of adults to draw or paint you, and they will be very mature about the situation. Those who take life drawing classes are hoping to improve their technique and will view the nude model as a work of art. Many become an art model for extra money and for the love of creativity. You will be expected to stand in various poses whilst the class sketches you. A life drawing model is highly respected by those who attend and it is a great way to gain modelling experience.

Glamour Modelling

Nude modelling in other respects is often sexualised. For example, you might be modelling with no clothes on to sell a product or magazines. Those who embark on a glamour modelling career need to be comfortable posing in a seductive and provocative way either nude, topless or wearing lingerie. Confidence is key at a modelling shoot. Never be forced into modelling nude. Always state before agreeing to do the shoot what you are prepared to do.

Before Nude Modelling…

  • Are you likely to regret your decision? Remember, once images are out there in our modern age, they cannot be reclaimed. Even deleted images are never truly erased.
  • Have you done your research? Is the brand, photographer or agency reputable? Do not be afraid to ask for references. Anyone legitimate will have nothing to hide.
  • Do you feel safe? You can bring someone along to wait for you if you’re having doubts. At the very least, always tell someone where you’ll be going!
  • You can leave at any time. If you begin to feel uncomfortable make your voice heard. Posing nude can leave you feeling vulnerable. Do not let anyone take advantage of that.
  • Read all contracts thoroughly. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is very important in this line of work that you understand every aspect.
  • Is it worth it? Don’t feel pressured into doing a shoot for the money or experience. Simply decline if you’re not 100% comfortable.

A Few Things to Consider

  • Are you being pushed past your limits, further than you thought you would allow yourself to go? Don’t ever convince yourself that this is the only way to be a successful model. Ignore anyone who tells you that.
  • Everyone has different expectations and beliefs. What is empowering for some may compromise the integrity of others. That’s a personal thing, and only you can decide.
  • Can you handle people from your real life finding the images? Only ever do things you are comfortable with. If you will feel ashamed with friends or relatives seeing the images, don’t do it!
  • Find out expectations before you go and adhere to them. For example, wear loose outfits to avoid clothing lines, because this could be seen as unprofessional on a shoot.
  • Make sure that everyone on the photoshoot respects your privacy. Just because you have agreed to model nude does not mean that you wish to walk around naked all day. Take a robe and ask for a place to get changed.

It Isn’t for Everyone

Nude modelling isn’t for everyone; and it’s certainly not for anyone under 18. If you are at a shoot and are asked to undress decline. You should never feel forced or uncomfortable. Nude modelling is an area in the industry that is professional and organised. A lot of top models have modelled nude for magazines yet the setting is very respectable and safe. Unfortunately, some individuals do take advantage of this area and turn it into something very seedy. Stay away from predators and only operate through the correct channels.

Little models would have been unheard of in the fashion industry several years ago, but thankfully, the fashion industry is seeing many changes. Little models are representative of such change; in that they are literally embodying the inclusive nature of the future of fashion!

It is often said to be the case that taller models are better for catwalks and high fashion because the clothes look better. This is true to some extent, but that’s because the clothes have always been made with taller people in mind. These days, little models are used because clothes are being produced in petite sizing. Designers are realizing that cool people (whether in ‘real life’ or in popular culture) are shorter in stature, and so they’re producing clothes which will fit them. To market them, they use little models – in other words, they use models equally as petite as their desired consumers, to really attract them to the brand!

So, Why Do We Love Little Models?

Little models are great for so many reasons, but some reasons are:

  • They’re short, but they’re often not to be messed with. Don’t be fooled by their size! They will work hard to prove themselves.
  • Good things come in small packages!
  • They’re short – and often sweet. This can be ideal for cute clothing brands or clothing which is particularly aimed at young adults.
  • They know how to be themselves, and push themselves against the odds!

The Realities For Little Models

little models

At present, it’s still unlikely that if you’re petite – under 5’5 for women – that you will ever be used on a high fashion catwalk. The market exists for taller models; which can seem harsh, but that’s simply the business side of things put in action.

However, there is plenty of catalogue and promotional work that you can be hired for. Plus, a lot of independent lines will also be interested in this particular look.

As petite modelling grows, the appeal of little models will, too. Some brands are already filling a niche on catwalks by diversifying.

Do you think shorter models will be used more in future? Let us know in the comments!

Hair model is a term used for an individual who is employed to promote products such as hairspray, shampoo, conditioner and gel. Imagine the L’Oreal Paris adverts where after using the products the hair is dramatically released to reveal a beautiful set of locks. Therefore, most cosmetic brands will look for long, luscious tresses to enhance their TV commercial or campaign. Some use famous celebrities to expand their reach whereas others opt for a hair model to feature in the ad. Of course, if your goal is to work in hair modelling this will not be your only option as you can look for work in beauty and fashion also. It is reassuring to realise that even though your focus is on modelling your hair you also can find opportunities in other fields. For now let’s concentrate on how to get your hair in shape to be considered by a beauty brand.

Hair Model

Use the right products for your hair type

It is important to choose shampoo and conditioner that compliments your hair type. Brands such as Pantene, Garnier and Herbal Essence all produce different products that restore the balance in your hair. The bottle usually states what the formula does such as ‘for dry/lifeless hair’, ‘for greasy/shiny hair’ or ‘for coloured hair’; you get the gist. If you are unsure seek advice from your hairdresser.

Don’t apply too much heat

Too much heat via your hairdryer, curlers or straighteners will definitely damage your hair. Keep the use of these tools to a minimum to avoid drying your locks out and causing split ends. Drying, straightening and curling your hair every day will not keep your hair in a good condition so it is important to sometimes let your hair dry or fall naturally if you can.

Trim regularly

The common misconception is that to have long hair you should not make a trip to the hairdresser. However, regular visits to the stylist will ensure that your hair is healthy and full of life cutting off the dead ends. In fact, cutting your hair makes your tresses grow quicker, therefore do not avoid your appointments.

Don’t wash too often

To keep natural oils present, which are really good for your hair do not wash your locks everyday. It is important to allow for your tresses to get a little greasy rather than washing constantly. Also your hair will become very soft and difficult to handle for the stylist when trying to manipulate your hair in a certain style. Keep your routine to every other day to allow your natural oils to nourish your hair.

Do not change your hair colour dramatically

Avoid bleaching your tresses in different colours as the process will ruin the condition of your locks and the industry will not appreciate a bright pink or purple colour. Keep your tresses natural to ensure healthiness and appropriateness for hair modelling. Most cosmetic brands choose blonde, brunette or red heads over wild colours for their campaigns.

Net models are all the rage these days. Admittedly, a lot of people think that they have what it takes to become one, but net models have to be of a certain standard, just like any other type. It can be a bit of a joke these days – a lot of people think they’re an Instagram model just for having an account, for example. But there’s also very real potential to have a very real career!

net-models

You have the power to carve out your own path. That means that net models don’t actually have to wait for an agency to snap them up, or for a chance of being spotted out of the blue. There’s really a potential with net models to fill their own niche.

How Do You Become One?

To become an Internet model, there are a variety of paths you can take. If you have a friend who’s into photography, perhaps you could do a couple of test shoots with them. A lot of net models get their start by asking a talented contact to shoot them, and then taking it from there. Analyse how you look on camera, and be realistic about your potential.

A lot of net models approach things differently; for example, they find social media fame first. Once they’re got an Instagram following or a lot of readers on their fashion blog, they then become net models by default. Perhaps they’re approached by brands to represent their clothing, or maybe a beauty brand needs a new face. There’s a lot of scope for net models out there!

The final way to find Internet fame as a model is to become a model through ordinary channels, and then use the Internet to promote yourself. A lot of glamour models take this route, because a lot of this work is undertaken online through modelling for subscriptions and so on.

Of course, there are other ways to model online, but please be aware that some of these can be risky. If applying for a job posing to be specifically for Internet models to boost their presence or build a portfolio, there can unfortunately be some people prepared to exploit you. Take great caution, and don’t give out any personal or private information. Always check credentials, and if you’re uncomfortable, don’t proceed. Some things – for example taking your clothes off – are personal decisions for legal adults, but if it’s not the right choice for you, don’t do it.

Why Would A Model Choose Internet Modelling?

There are loads of great reasons net models have for doing what they do! Some of the best are:

  • A place to find your niche, no matter your shape or size or ‘look’.
  • A total freedom to choose your own schedules.
  • Many net models find fame online!
  • There can be top fees to those models with the most talent and potential.
  • A lack of start up costs.
  • No commission to an agent.
  • The chance to be in control of your own projects.
  • You can set your own rates of pay.

However, you need to remember that:

  • You’ll have to find your own work – this can be tough. Do you have contacts? An online persona?
  • You’ll have to organise and pay for lots of marketing materials.
  • You’ll need to be the one to handle meetings and field calls.
  • Finances can become complicated. You’ll have to chase invoices and manage your own taxes.
  • You’ll have to ensure your own personal safety.

In the long run, net models can be seen to be living the dream, but it can be different for everyone. Do you think it could work for you?

Alternative models fill a certain ‘niche’ in the modelling industry. Often just referred to as ‘alt models’, alternative models are men and women who tend to model for brands that aren’t as conventional or mainstream as others. However, that doesn’t mean alternative models aren’t successful – in fact, there is a huge demand for them! These days, a less commercial look is becoming especially desirable, as it represents youth and edginess, something that a lot of brands are trying to push.

Let us capture your unique beauty, register with us today! Successful candidates are invited to a professional photoshoot at our studio.

Find useful tips on alternative modelling in the video below.

Stand out from the Crowd

Alternative models might model for goth brands, hipster brands, emo brands or even scene brands. This is because they often fit a certain ‘image’ – that of tattoos, piercings and bright hair colour. Many models wth an alternative style rock distinctively unnatural colour hair such as bright pink, electric blue or a vivid purple. If you’re someone who isn’t really interested in convention, but whose appearance is still visually appealing, you may be interested in the aesthetics of alternative models. It’s a great way to be involved, as there are lots of companies looking for this alternative style, but less people who fit the kind of look they’re interested in!

So how can you catch their eye? Not all alternative models have lots of body modifications. However, it undoubtedly helps in a part of the modeling industry which is all about standing out. So, even if you’re not covered in ink, a knowledge of that kind of world and an experimental style will really help.

Types of Work

In terms of work, alternative models might be asked to represent independent clothing lines. There are many fashion labels in the commercial mainstream market with brand advertising that has an edgy attitude. Take Dr Martens for example, the footwear brand based in England. They regularly feature unique models to set an ultra-cool image that appeals to their market. Dr Martens is a brand name that is popular with the young generation who wish to experiment with their individual look and personality. Their appeal spans the whole of Britain, Europe and even International audiences.

You may perhaps be asked to model at things like car shows. They’re also highly successful in the rock music industry; alternative models tick many of the same boxes as rockstars themselves – attractive with a ‘bad boy’ or ‘bad girl’ image. They might wear band merchandise, promote their gigs, pose on album covers, or appear on stage. Knowing the right people can help in this area, so it’s time to get networking!

High Fashion

There’s a huge celebration of all things alternative at London Edge, where alternative models might be hired to walk the catwalk at the trade show. Lots of brands get involved, representing the huge scene that this particular style has in the UK market.

Alternative models often aren’t involved in high fashion, but there is occasionally a crossover. For example, some who traditionally meet certain conventions can be hired for other kinds of fashion or even catwalk work. A lot of modelling agencies are opposed to tattoos and piercings. Remember that if this is the kind of work you want most, it may be advisable not to go down this route. Saying that you may have noticed that large companies have recently started using models with lots of tattoos to promote their clothes commercially. When hired by a fashion brand you will take part in a photoshoot. On the day make-up artists and hair stylists will enhance your alternative style.

The best way to find out if you can succeed in the industry is to sign to an agency. This way at casting calls you will be given a fair audition as the agency will have connections with brands who are looking for models with an edgy attitude or to go in a new direction. Casting dates will vary as your agency will contact you as and when the jobs become available.

Diversity in Modelling

Some alternative models might be involved in glamour modelling. However, it totally depends on their personal preferences. For example, Dita Von Teese is known for her burlesque dancing and modelling. Her seductive, glamorous look is a very different style to the usual type in the modelling industry. Her highly recognisable black hair colour and pale complexion makes her stand out. Another example, is Dany Divine. Her distinctively unnatural colour hair – red and black, her heavy make-up and provocative clothing definitely put her in the glamour section of alternative modelling. Dita Von Teese and Dany Divine are just a few that have found success.  There are even fetish models with modelling sites such as Suicide Girls.

You will see smaller and bigger alternative models, as it’s less about your size unless this is specifically specified for a particular job. Different styles of clothing will vary. For example, band promotion work might be looking for petite women, whereas gothic clothing companies might be interested in a plus sized model to suit the needs of a lot of their customers. Alternative models represent a world where many of the followers are concerned with being individuals! You can be yourself.

If you stand out, you might have a chance. Be natural in your style, but keep up to date on the trends in this world. As with all types of modelling, you will have to be well-groomed. However, with alternative models, it’s all about being different as well.

If you’ve got a pierced lip or nose, stretched ears or perhaps pink hair, maybe this is the side of the industry for you!
