If you are new to modelling you may not be aware that there are a number of different types of work you can do to make a successful living in the industry. One example is catalogue modelling. Ever spent time flicking through the pages of the catalogues sent to you by your favourite brands? Then you will already be familiar with the work of a catalogue model. You may even be comparing yourself to the men and women smiling from the pages and wondering if you could do it too.

One of the great things about this profitable portion of the modelling world is that there are very few criteria. If your look, shape or size does not match the model proportions you have come to expect then don’t worry, there are plenty of opportunities for people like you.

Personality counts so if you have a bubbly nature, are vivacious, friendly and easy going then you will already score high with agencies and clients alike. Quite often people working as actors will also cross over into commercial work.

Take that first step in your catalogue modelling career and register with us today!

How Do I Know If I Have Potential?

To be able to do catalogue work you will need to possess a few basic attributes:

  • Clear skin
  • Shiny hair
  • Good teeth
  • A great smile
  • A healthy, well-proportioned body
  • Bags of personality

What Kind of Work Could I Do?

There are catalogues available for just about every kind of product you could think of. Sure you will most likely spend a lot of your time modelling clothes but, depending on your age, you could also find yourself featured in catalogues for sports equipment, homewares, underwear, shoes, accessories, health and beauty products, mobility products and more. And it’s not just printed publications; your picture is also likely to be used online for corporate and retail websites too. As the online world is becoming hugely popular more catalogue brands are creating websites to reach out to their audience. Therefore, catalogue fashion models will hopefully have a lot of work coming their way.

Catalogue Modelling Jobs

Catalogues such as The Next Directory, Freemans and Littlewoods have a wide range of clothing to shoot. With a target audience aimed at the whole family it is not just female models that are hired. Separated into relevant sections catalogues cater for the husband, kids, grandma and distant relatives. Therefore, the photoshoot can steer away from fashion. Fitness models are hired to showcase gym equipment, children play with age appropriate toys and the whole family could be sat around a dining room table.

Modelling jobs are very varied requiring for models to act natural and to be extremely versatile. Remember it is a destination for parents to do the shopping for every member of the family in one place. Mums will most likely buy for their children, their husband and a few bits for herself also making shopping much easier. Therefore, modelling does have to reflect this with group shots. Child modelling is very much a part of the catalogue world.

Catalogue models are not needed for the runway at London Fashion Week yet will regularly attend photoshoots. The days can be long and exhausting as the photographer tries to shoot as many looks or products as possible. There are a lot of pages to fill. The poses will be kept to minimal, natural poses that showcase the fit of the design or how the product works. It can be difficult to be relaxed and 100% natural yet with modelling experience it will become a lot easier. Each photoshoot will most likely to be shot in a studio to keep cost down and to be in control.

What Do Agencies and Their Clients Look For?

Whilst there are no set criteria, some castings and jobs may specify a certain look, age range or clothing size. Every job is different and so modelling agencies aim to have a broad range of models on their books. For example, a petite clothing company will require models that are below a certain height in order for their clothes to fit a model well. Whereas a client seeking models for a mobility catalogue is likely to seek mature models who represent their target market. Similarly plus size models, ethnic models, child and teen models should all be suitable for certain kinds of catalogue work. Also, male modelling is a big part of the catalogue world.

How Do I Get Started?

Depending on how you prefer to work, you can either sign with a model agency that represents models in your category or you can choose to work freelance and find your own clients. To become a model it does demand hard work Either way you will need to invest in a professional portfolio of photographs at some point. Expert organisations such as UK Models can help you create a selection photographs and offer tips on finding reputable agents.

A Catalogue Models Salary

As with all types of modelling there is no set salary. The work is flexible and is up to you or your agency to negotiate a fair price. If you accept a job found by the agency, remember that they will take a percentage of the wage. New models may get paid less than experienced models however, make sure that you are being treated fairly and are not undervalued. Larger companies do have the money to pay so make sure that you are not silenced via clothes or products. These will not pay the bills.

The modelling industry does demand for flexibility and is not a 9-5 job. Therefore, you must be sensible with your finances as you may get a large cheque, which needs to last a while. Do not go on a spending spree within the first couple of days. Make sure you save so that if the next job is in a couple of weeks you have enough money to survive. Also, make sure that you account for work that might be paid a couple of months after you have completed it. It’s about balancing and saving money.

Working as a model can be a rewarding career. Consider all of your options before deciding which kind of work is right for you.

If you have worked as a model in the past or have always wanted to be a model but worry that your best years are behind you think again! These days mature models are more popular than ever as marketers wake up to the influence of ageing consumers. The grey rebellion is real as models over 60 years old are being taken seriously.

Older Female Models Fight for Their Place

Not only are there a wide range of catalogues and magazines aimed specifically at older people, but big brands and even exclusive fashion houses are opening up to the idea of using models of all ages. US clothing company American Apparel named a 62 year old model as the face and body of its lingerie campaign, and high street brands including Zara and Marks and Spencer have also worked with older models. Now well into her 80’s, Daphne Selfe is one of the world’s oldest supermodels, whilst 73 year old male couture model Charles Schumann and 69 year old Maye Musk are proving that it’s never too late to make it big.

Successful Mature Models

It’s inspiring to see successful models grace the runway and covers of well-known magazines. With Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Dries Van Noten championing mature models, we thought we’d take a look at a few who are grabbing the fashion world with both hands.

Daphne Selfe, age 89, modelled for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair.

Jan de Villeneuve, age 72, graced the catwalk for Simone Rocha and Osman.

Maye Musk, age 70, has fronted campaigns for Swarovski and appeared on the cover of Grazia magazine and Prestige.

Frances Dunscombe, age 85, has posed in Prada for Hunger Magazine and walked in London Fashion Week.

How to Become an Older Model

Both older men and women can expect to enjoy a successful modelling career, and whilst you will need to be fit and healthy, the great news is that there is no set look for you to conform to. Agents like to see natural beauty and confidence, and that can be found in models of all ages.

In order to be considered as a mature model you will need to be:

  • Aged 35-40 years or over.
  • Have a healthy and toned body.
  • Demonstrate a vibrant personality through your poses.
  • Have good skin, don’t worry wrinkles and age spots are rarely a problem.
  • Embrace your grey hair.

mature-models

What Kind of Work Is Available?

If successful you can expect to be booked for a wide variety of work including fashion, catalogue, advertising, medical/health, editorial, character and much more. Top designers are embracing the trend and the need for the older generation to be represented. Models over 70 are no longer silenced as their silver locks and smile lines grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar alongside younger models. There is a very relevant place in the industry for ageing beauty that inspires. Many older female models take to Instagram to showcase their talent, gaining followers in there thousands. Successful mature women demonstrate how stylish and fashion forward older models can be via the platform. Many skip the casting process due to their chic posts on Instagram. Also, modelling agencies are responding to the demand signing beautiful models in their 70s.

How to Approach an Agent?

  1. UK Models will be able to advise you on reputable a older model agency in and around your local area that represent models in your particular niche. If you show the potential required to be successful they will advise you on how to contact them to see if they are accepting new models.
  2. In addition to making introductions to agencies, UK Models can help you create a collection of professional images that best showcase your look to agencies and casting directors. They understand what agencies will be looking for and, along with fashion images, can help you create naturally beautiful pictures that highlight your body shape and facial features.
  3. Be confident in your look and make the most of your attributes. If you have good skin and hair make sure it is evident in your pictures. Similarly, if your body is your best asset then dress and pose in a way that flatters it rather than detracts from it.

mature-models

Remember that there is beauty and interest to be found in a face or body that has experienced the ups and downs of life. What’s more, you will no doubt find that your age makes you more resilient to the inevitable knock backs that come with the work.

Whether you are looking to revive a previous modelling career or are hoping to make your commercial modelling debut now is the time to prove that you can look great no matter how old you are. So what are you waiting for?

Where Are All the 50 Year Olds?

Although, the silver-haired rebellion is inspirational where mature models are making ground in a previously young persons world, the 50 year olds are stuck in the middle. Many are told they are in fact not old enough to become a mature model as their hair is not grey enough and their face is not aged enough. This creates an age gap that leaves the female models over 50 years old with no place to go. The mid-lifers are being missed completely as they are ‘too young’ to be classed as a mature model but ‘too old’ to be a young model.

Also, the older models who are successful are tall and slim, which many mature women cannot identify with as we all come in different shapes and sizes. The mature model revolution has certainly made a start yet there remains a far way to go to avoid tokenism. The last thing we want is for these sassy, confident older models to be a flash in the pan. Hopefully, the concept will evolve further including more models 35 and over gracing the pages of elite magazines.

What Does a Model Scout Do?

Model scouts seek talent to hopefully launch as the new top model on the scene. For young, aspiring models it is important to be aware and informed to distinguish the trustworthy from the unreliable.

Where Do They Look?

They usually lurk at busy places and events that attract a young audience. It is a time where experts who are hired by large modelling agencies can scan the crowd to find potential. Festivals, shopping malls and apparently fast food chains such as McDonalds prove that teenagers and young adults gravitate towards these places.

It is the perfect opportunity to evaluate a large crowd rather than waiting in a quiet area. Typically, the talent are not aware of their potential to model or are caught off guard whilst enjoying the festival or shopping experience.

Scouts on Instagram

Living in a digital obsessed world, scouts do turn to social media to find new faces. In particular, Instagram is very visual with Instagram modelling become a big thing in the industry. An Instagram model search will be successful for some agents without having to leave the comfort of the office.

Do be wary when replying to messages and comments as a lot of scam artists hide behind a screen. Make sure that you check if a company or individual is legit before agreeing to meet. If someone is claiming to be from a large agency or company, a quick phone call will determine if they are telling the truth. On a positive note, it gives aspiring models the opportunity to be noticed worldwide. Check out the latest hashtags to ensure that agents are aware of your profile.

How to Know If the Opportunity is Legit

When approached by a model scout whilst at a music festival or shopping at your favourite high street store such as TopshopZara or Urban Outfitters keep your wits about you to assess whether the opportunity is genuine. A reputable scout will carry a business card with an address, phone number and email contact printed clearly on the marketing tool.

Once home research the company to check if their facts are correct and their reputation within the industry. This task should be easy to complete as a modelling agency will have a website to evaluate. An easy way to spot a fraud is to ring the number to see if it actually a legit company. Be wary if the scout asks for money upfront or for you to leave with them immediately. Always be polite, thank them for their interest and proceed to find out more before agreeing to meet them in person to be thorough and sensible. If under 18, always make sure that you check with your parents. They will be able to help you understand if the scout is trustworthy.

What Modelling Scouts Look For?

Professionals scouting for models will usually seek individuals aged between 14 – 21 with healthy skin, physique and hair as a base. The winning formula will be a young person who stands out in a large crowd with an unusual face, a charismatic personality or an inspirational aura. A great bone structure, being photogenic and a natural charm will go far. Candidates of this calibre are easy to stop as their infectious nature draws people in – a muse if you like.

How to Impress

Scouts are looking to see young talent in real life. Whether you are shopping, dancing in the crowd at a festival or sunbathing, individuals are unaware of scouts looking for potential. Young individuals in these situations will not be worrying if their make-up is perfect or their outfit is super stylish. They will be going about their life as normal. Therefore, to impress you just have to go about your everyday life as you would. Don’t overthink it!

For example, Amy Maggs was spotted at a One Direction concert in Manchester and Saska Ingham was shopping in Oxford Circus eating a waffle on a school trip when she was discovered, whilst Tatum Marchetti was scouted at an event at the O2 arena. Also, Kate Moss was found in the airport and Jourdan Dunn was shopping in Primark. The fashion world works on a global scale all around the world in big cities such as London, Paris and New York. You never know when the opportunity will arrive if at all so do not hang around these areas. Go about your everyday life actively working towards becoming a model. If you are spotted then this is a huge bonus.

How to Get Discovered by a Modelling Agency

It is important to not wait for the opportunity to come to you by attending every music festival and shopping daily – difficult to resist I know!!! Submitting applications online to various modelling agencies of your choice is another way of getting noticed by modelling scouts. Also, modelling agencies host open calls to meet lots of potential models.

After being spotted by experts you will be invited to attend a model agency for a meeting. They usually take it slow and steady by explaining how the business works. A plan and next steps will be discussed including your availability over the next six months. Remember whilst in high school modelling is just a hobby. At this point photographs will be taken of you by the agency to begin your career as hopefully a successful model.

This is an exciting time for aspiring models yet there will be a lot of hard work involved in shaping a modelling career as this is the starting point. A reputable modelling agency will provide training and advice for those who have never worked in the field previously. It is important to be confident, friendly and positive when starting out and learn from those more experienced than you. Absorb as much information as possible to survive in a competitive industry. As you gradually secure more roles you will gain more experience and confidence to build a modelling career that you will be proud of. Start conversations, be interesting and engaging as there is much more to being a male or female model than good looks. Finally, personality is key as the model scouts like genuine individuals who see modelling as a creative outlet.

Model poses differ in the industry depending on the niche that you are aiming towards. The common trait that runs across all areas is an air of confidence and self assurance that jumps from each image.

Strong delivery is extremely important when posing for a professional photographer demonstrating your experience within the industry. Do not become complacent and constantly improve by practising and perfecting those bank of poses that work well. A clean, neat line is much preferred by designers to promote their clothing.

Our photoshoot shot by a professional photographer is the perfect way to practise your poses. Simply register today to begin building your portfolio.

8 Quick Posing Tips for Aspiring Models

  1. Think of your hair placement.
  2. Always position your chin forwards.
  3. Place your arm slightly away from your body.
  4. Leave your waist open.
  5. Turn your shoulders slightly to avoid being photographed straight on.
  6. Ensure that you have a strong posture.
  7. Keep your shoulders back.
  8. Look directly at the camera.

For a more in-depth guide we’ve collated 50 go-to poses along with modelling tips on how to create each position. Each tip is aimed at a specific niche along with fashion photography to explain each basic pose. Our ultimate guide will guide you on where to place your model hands, legs and head.

But, just before you read on, watch this video to look good in every pic!

How to Master Commercial Poses

Catalogue and commercial modelling demands basic poses that are simple and minimal eliminating exaggeration. A simple bend of the knee, hand on hip or step to the side will usually suffice. It is essential to not distract from the clothing when delivering a strong range of different poses. In this sector less is certainly more.

Hold your physique as straight as possible with a good posture to avoid slumping and slouched positions that will not promote the clothing well and may create unwanted ripples. Smooth, slender lines will be perceived well in a commercial advert or catalogue product / campaign shot enhanced by an elongated neck, shoulders back and tilt of the head. Happy, smiley facial expressions are also perceived well by professional photographers in this niche.

  1. Stand slightly diagonal, bring hair over to the right, lift your right arm to your touch hair and look to the camera.

2. Cross your arms loosely at your waist, stand sideways slightly bending your left knee, twist your torso to face the front and tilt your head to the right.

Powerful and strong standing poses will be desired to capture a following in awe of their figure. Building a range of different positions is the perfect way for the photoshoot to run smoothly.

Lifting weights, performing press ups, sit ups and lunges or flexing their muscles will be expected of fitness models at a shoot. These model poses will showcase muscles perfectly and promote fitness. Master the Art of Glamour Poses

Glamour modelling demands seductive and provocative poses to promote lingerie. A confident female model needs to be able to ooze sexiness through poses that could involve lying suggestively on the floor on your back or front, leaning against a wall or sitting on a chair.

These activities seem quite normal yet it is up to the model to bring the sex appeal needed from the glamour niche. Models will be wearing very little clothing exposing a lot of flesh and therefore, it is essential to have complete body awareness and understand which angles and poses will enhance your nude areas.

Ripples and folds will not be accepted, which happens to all shapes when sitting in an unflattering position.

  1. Place your right hand on your head bending the arm. Turn your head to the right and reach your left hand to almost touch your face. Push your chest forward and your bottom to the side.

model-poses

2. Arch your back, push your chest forward and bottom backwards. Raise your left arm to rest on the top of your head and lift your right arm to touch your hair.

model-poses

3. Lie on your front resting your elbows and bend your knees looking seductively at the camera.

model-poses

4. Sit on a chair with legs wide, place your right forearm on your right thigh and your left elbow on your left thigh and lean forward.

model-poses

5. Pout whilst lifting your right arm to your long flowing locks.

model-poses

6. Sit sideways on a chair and place your right arm to your head and look over your shoulder.

model-poses

7. Push your chest forward and your bottom backwards. Place your right arm on your stomach and rest your head on the bent left arm.

model-poses

8. Place your right hand to gently touch your left arm. Cross the right leg and tilt the head downwards.

model-poses

9. Lift both hands to brush against your face. Stand sideways and twist the torso pushing out your chest. Look down and close your eyes.

model-poses

10. Step forward on your left leg, push chest out and leave arms to fall behind. Lift chin and look to the camera.

model-poses

11. Stand sideways, resting your right arm on your left. Turn your head to the front and glance to the side.

Paid modelling jobs are available in the industry yet young hopefuls have to gain understanding of contracts to ensure that they do not get exploited. Unfortunately, it is common for eager individuals to accept roles out of excitement and fail to fully understand the legal document. Some experts put hidden clauses in the contract, which result in models receiving little payment for their efforts. It is up to the model to have the confidence and knowledge to point out these errors to the employer and ensure that you receive a worthwhile amount. Desperate hopefuls do not like to challenge the contract in fear of not landing the role yet it is important that you do.

paid modelling jobs

Change is on its way!

Coco Rocha campaigns for young models who are being exploited by agencies and designers in the industry. She believes that adolescents who join the modelling world should be supported and given advice on how to read contracts and negotiate terms. The business side of the industry is daunting and intimidating to teens who have little life and work experience. Therefore, young models need to rely on professionals to guide them through each stage without the worry of being exploited. Coco has taken on an ownership and management role at New York agency, Nomad Mgmt. Here she will be able to guide young minds who feel as though they have no voice. Her experience in the industry has highlighted areas that need addressing, which she will be able to fulfil via the new opportunity.

How to beat the industry

However, not all agencies will have this support network, which will demand the responsibility to lie in your own hands. When securing paid modelling jobs please do the following to ensure that you are rewarded for your efforts.

  • Ask for a contract if a document is not handed over to you.
  • Read carefully to ensure that you understand what is asked of you.
  • If you do not quite grasp some of the lingo, simply ask.
  • Have the confidence to question any part that doesn’t make sense regarding pay, times or location.
  • Ensure that they’re no hidden costs that you have to pay for such as extortionate travel.
  • Agree on a set amount of time and anything over shall be charged at a certain rate.
  • Do not sign a contract that you do not feel comfortable and confident with.

paid modelling jobs

The difference between voluntary work and paid modelling jobs

Remember that voluntary work is a very different matter to underpaid modelling jobs. Many aspiring models accept work experience to build up a portfolio. Also, both parties are agreed that their time will be offered free of charge. Therefore, it is a very different matter when a employer states a certain figure and either goes back on their word or hides costs that go unnoticed. It is a deception that happens far to frequently and needs to be handled by models themselves. Furthermore, young hopefuls are fearful to question authority in case it backfires on them negatively. Maybe, if models stand together against the industry and challenge untoward behaviour, change should happen.

What tips do you have for aspiring models who are unsure on how to confront an agent or employer about pay? Please share below………..

How to get into the modelling industry is pondered regularly by hopefuls. Many wish to become a successful model yet have no clue of how to begin their journey. It is a daunting industry to tackle with high competition yet it is important to start with small steps. Remember the process will take time and will not happen overnight. It takes persistence, commitment and dedication to enter the industry and remain a part of the fashion world. Do not be fooled by the glamour as the modelling universe demands hard work by all.

how to get into the modelling industry

Where to begin?

Your first step will be to decide which niche you wish to enter. Be realistic! Most models would love to walk the runway for Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton or Chanel yet are not suitable for the part. It is a harsh reality to face but if you concentrate your efforts on the correct sector you will have more success and experience to offer. Always aim high and if you truly believe high fashion is the route for you, attack with full force as the competition is fierce. If you do fail, at least you know you have tried and can move onto commercial modelling. To survive and enter the industry it is important to learn how to deal with rejection from the start. Do not take it personally or let it stop you achieving your dream.

how to get into the modelling industry

Find an agency

Once you have evaluated the different niches and your options, it is time to locate a suitable, trustworthy agency. Research a variety of companies to uncover which are reliable and appeal to you. There are many agencies that specialise in different niches so make sure that you are approaching the correct one. Once your list is complete ensure that you look at the application process and follow their specifications exactly. If you make a mistake or go against their wishes it will not be received well. Agencies are inundated with applications and the smallest error will go against you. Take time to fill out the application to a high standard and do not hit send until you are completely happy.

how to get into the modelling industry

Photography

The images that you send to the agency are required to be professional and of high quality. Whether the establishment prefers portfolio images or head/body shots ensure that the photography is to an excellent standard. These shots are the tool to your success and the first impression that a future employer will see. Do not send amateur images as this will go against you. It might seem expensive to capture suitable shots yet it is an investment to your future. Once you have a set of images to use that show your capabilities you can use these to apply to a variety of opportunities. Take the time to reach that standard as you will benefit from this further down the line.

A model lifestyle seems like the absolute dream. We’ve all thought about it – whether modelling has been on our radar our whole lives, or we’ve spontaneously decided to get involved, it’s something that looks glam and desirable regardless.

It’s a common misconception that a model’s lifestyle entails travel, attractive people, money, and parties… right? Well, yes, but their day-to-day may not be as glamorous as you might initially think – there are challenges, and even downsides, that come along with it too!

Do like the sound of a model’s lifestyle? Take that first step and register with us!

Is a Model Lifestyle All It’s Cracked up to Be?

We’ll level with you – when you get to the top of your game, you will certainly experience the high life, at least somewhat. From parties in New York to yacht trips in the Maldives. You and your bronzed, beautiful body could see it all!

You could make millions, achieve fame, and date the most attractive suitors in the world. People will know your name, and they’ll even be envious.

In reality, not many people get to that stage. But those who do might even struggle with the lot they’ve got. You see, a model lifestyle can be overwhelming to those who aren’t used to it. And, whilst we’re sure the fame and fortune will soften the blow… it’s something you have to consider!

model-lifestyle

The Negative Side of a Model Lifestyle

With each and every benefit of the lifestyle; there are usually negatives. Of course, you shouldn’t let these put you off your dream of how to be a model (many exist in any industry you might be interested in). However, you should prepare yourself, because when you arm yourself with knowledge, you’re best prepped to combat things.

The Constant Travel

When you travel to far away places like San Francisco, Seoul or San Diego, you may miss family, friends, pets, and your home especially during the Christmas season. There may be important milestones or commitments that you cannot attend, all because you are working. Modelling is a job – you are on contract, so you mustn’t forget that.

The modelling world does not let distance get in the way. British models will get to see lots of new places around the globe. However, your priority is work and days off in New York are a huge bonus. Always check with your modelling agency to find out who is paying for your flights and the hotel. Aspiring models can be taken advantage of so make sure you ask the right questions.

The Pressures

Successful models also face a lot of pressure in the modelling industry. Whether it’s the pressure to stay thin, the pressure to work long hours, or the pressure to look a certain way. It can make you doubt yourself and who you are. You might have to put off your education, getting married, or even starting a family.

Being strong minded and confident in yourself is crucial to your success. Petite models have to fight for their place and to be seen. Being slightly shorter didn’t stop Kate Moss from becoming a global success. Take your so called weaknesses and use them to your advantage.

It’s Exhausting

Modelling can be tiring. Unless you’re one of the best and most well-known, it can involve years of rejection, heartache, and even discrimination. You might even start unpaid, and you might find it hard to fit in other work if you’re serious about your career. In other words, it’s not too glamorous at first at all!

Expect to work long hours. Modelling jobs start early in the morning and finish late at night. Working at fashion weeks is more than walking down the runway. There’s fittings, learning routines and multiple fashion shows to manage. Only the dedicated can deal with the long days.

Photoshoots are just as tiring. The demand to get the perfect shot is real and fashion models will not be leaving the studio until the winning image is captured by the professional photographer. Editorial shots for Vogue or Elle are time crucial with the pressure to get images of models that will demand attention. As the saying goes, the fashion industry doesn’t sleep.

model-lifestyle

Create a Healthy Lifestyle

A day in the life of a model involves eating healthy food and having a strict beauty routine. It’s tempting to drink fizzy pop and snack on fast food however, this will be detrimental to your career. These kind of foods will leave you feeling lethargic and looking run down.

Eat a balanced diet – we all like a bar of chocolate yet its about moderation. Drink a lot of water to keep hydrated and think about your daily skin routine. Look up model skin care tips to know how to create a flawless complexion. The best advice is to take your makeup off at night and then cleanse, tone and moisturise. You need to take care of your skin right now.

No matter your body type you must exercise regularly to keep toned and fit. This is not about loosing weight but being healthy. Plus size models also maintain a workout routine to feel good about themselves.

It’s Not Full Time

The modelling industry demands for you to be flexible, spontaneous and hard working. You will be hired per job with the hope of securing more work at a later date. The secret to being at ease with not knowing where your next job will come from is to save money and work hard.

Each role allows for you to build your modelling portfolio to keep it relevant and fresh showcasing your model potential.

Being a fashion model can be so rewarding, you just need to keep your head screwed on. If you can do that, you can do anything in this game.

Which part of the model lifestyle appeals to you most? Let us know in the comments below!

Models getting ready… how long do they take? Do they spend longer, or less time, than the average person? So many questions.

When it comes to models getting ready, it’s a really long, arduous process. You’d think these women and men wouldn’t need any effort at all – they’re often blessed with natural good looks, after all. However, models getting ready is a process. You can’t just look good; you have to look perfect!

The Stages Of Models Getting Ready

Preparing for a photoshoot starts way before you actually get there. It might involve weeks – even months or years – of healthy eating and even a fitness regime. You’ll also have to prepare your skin and overall appearance by drinking lots of water, and investing in products to enhance your appearance.

Next, you might be asked to prepare by wearing a certain type of underwear or a plain top to wear. Alternatively, you might be asked to do base make up if the shoot is low budget. Learning how to do this requires practice. Understanding what to bring to each shoot is also an important task. If you’ve been asked to do something or prepare anything at all – from your hair to an outfit – you must adhere.

models-getting-ready

At the shoot itself, there are models getting ready in a range of different manners. For example, there is likely to be a make-up artist (MUA) on sit. Models getting ready require a lot of help, so a hair stylist is often there, too.

Remember, the creative vision of the shoot is more important than natural beauty or model’s strengths. When models are being prepared for something, it’s for someone else’s vision – rarely their own. Therefore, it takes a lot of work and can take a long time.

Models need to take some test shots to check all the hard work has been done for a reason! Make-up on camera needs to be visible and flawless, and hair should be in place and perfect for the images.

It Worth It?

There are many aspects when it comes to models getting ready, and despite the fact that models take less primping and preening than the average person, it still takes a lot of effort and time. You might think it’s all fun and games being pampered, but if you have to do this daily, it’s understandable that you might get restless!

Just remember that at the end, you’ll look amazing. Sure, you might not recognise yourself, but you will see yourself in a new light (which is always exciting), and the experience and shots for your portfolio afterwards will be more than worth it – who knows, it might even raise your profile if you’re asked to push boundaries, and maybe give you your big break.

Have you experienced getting ready as a model? Did you feel pampered or stressed?!

Models’ clothes in photoshoots are desirable, often expensive, and they’re bang on trend. However, before you get super jealous… just remember, that is literally their job. A model is more often than not literally paid to make clothing look good. In many respects, they even create the trends, just by being seen wearing the clothes before anyone else!

Show off your chic clothes at our photoshoot. Register today!

Models’ Clothes on Shoots

Depending on your level, depends on the kinds of clothing that you will be required to wear. Catalogue clothing, for example, will often be less expensive than the clothing that you’ll see in high end fashion shoots, but it can still be every bit as glamorous. No matter the level, remember that models will be made to look their very best to help the clothes to sell. Models’ clothes, therefore, have to scream “buy me”, because the consumers see them and think that they’d look great in them, too.

models' clothes

When it comes to models’ clothes and whether or not they get to take home they model, it really depends on the contract. Some of the bigger models will be endorsed by brands so they’ll basically be walking clothes horses wherever they go! Other models won’t be so lucky, but many will receive clothing as a thank you at the end of the shoot.

When you’re starting out as a model, the clothes can literally be a great negotiating point. You may well be working unpaid (Time For Print) for a small, independent label – but you might get some freebies in addition to the experience for your efforts.

Models’ Clothes in Real Life

Want the honest truth? Honestly, most models are just like the rest of us. Sure, an interest in fashion is typically present, but most models will have days where they’ll put together a basic outfit combination! Obviously, your basic jeans and Kendall Jenner’s basic jeans may well have a different price tag, however!

models' clothes

Of course, like in many careers, you do take the job home with you in many ways. You get to learn a lot about fashion and even develop a passion for different cuts, what works for you, and what doesn’t.

If you’re a model, what do you think of models’ clothes? Do you always look like life is a catwalk, or do you keep things a little more low-key?

A successful modelling career is the result of years of hard work, dedication and commitment. Building a strong repertoire of work does not come easy yet takes years of networking and determination to navigate the fashion industry. Many young hopefuls are drawn to the glamorous side of the modelling world yet the realisation is much different.

Where to Begin?

It can feel very daunting taking that first step towards a career in modelling. Many feel clueless with so many options to consider. The most important action is to do a lot of research to understand the modelling industry and where you fit.

Start your modelling career with us! Just register today!

modelling-career

Sign to a Reputable Agency

The most obvious route is signing to a model agency that can guide you in the correct direction. They will take a percent of your earnings for access to their network and securing your casting calls. It is important that you find a reputable company that only deducts what you owe and works legitimately.

Again, research is key to understanding how a modelling agency works. To apply most accept either online applications or hold walk in sessions. Make sure you are prepared by filling in the correct details and looking up the appointment times in advance.

Create a Portfolio

It is essential to create a portfolio either online or in print to showcase your potential to a future client. This may be an agent, casting director, photographer or designer looking to hire you. Ensure that the image quality is to a high standard and represents you in a positive light.

Throughout your career you will continually edit the portfolio to maintain a relevant evidence of work. Choosing a few shots to include on a Z-Card is also a great way of showcasing your talent at a networking event. Portfolios are the perfect way to present your experience to date.

modelling-career

Select a Niche

There are many types of modelling within the industry that you need to consider. High fashion, commercial, catalogue, fitness, plus-size and petite all demand different physiques, poses and lifestyles. You have to tailor your models career to a particular niche to realistically find success.

High fashion attracts a tall, slim catwalk model whereas the fitness industry demands a toned, muscular physique that needs to be maintained.

How Much do Models Get Paid

It can be very financially rewarding. If you’re working at a high level, you can expect to earn a lot more than an average salary. However, not everyone can reach this pay bracket.

It can be very hard to make it to the top. You’ll usually start out making little money, if any at all. Even when you are earning as a fashion model, the money might be very sporadic. For example, one week you might earn £500. You might then not earn any money for 6 weeks, before making a lump sum of £3000. It’s very hit and miss at times!

You might have to invest a lot to begin with. Whilst you won’t ever pay to join a modelling agency, your portfolio can cost money to build. You may be expected to pay for travel and accommodation, which can add up. Check before you agree to a job about what is actually paid for.

There can be freebies galore! If you’re representing a successful brand or label, one of the benefits can be getting to keep the clothes or getting free travel, food and drink. Sometimes fashion designers can pay you in clothes rather than cash. Make sure that you agree to this before signing the contract.

modelling-career

You Will Attend Many Castings

Your daily routine will involve attending casting after casting hoping to be hired for a fashion modelling job. Models spend a lot of time waiting to be seen before dashing across town to another audition.

Fitting castings and meetings around another job might be difficult when you first start. However, it is essential that you attend as many as possible to increase you chances of working regularly.

A Models Work Schedule

It is no 9-5 routine with very early mornings and late evenings. Photoshoots can be scheduled for different times of the day depending on the location or studio booking. Fashion shows also can vary depending on the designer. Therefore, models careers demand flexibility and a hard working ethos.

Ensure that you are organised and prepared for a modelling career that involves shooting into the night. Prompt, reliable female and male models who enjoy irregular hours and creating the winning shot are desired.

modelling-career

Be Prepared to Travel

You’ll get to see the world! If you’re a supermodel, you’ll see loads of different countries and visit places you might otherwise have never imagined to be possible. Many top models live out of a suitcase rarely being at home. Flying to cities like New York is a possibility.

Commercial models also are required to travel in the United Kingdom or around a city. Make sure you are aware of what is being paid for and arrive on time!

Once you’re successful in your modelling career, it can be hard never being at home around loved ones. You might feel like you’re missing out on experiences and start to feel unsettled. Make sure you confide in someone if you begin to feel this way.

Stay Safe

You can be extremely vulnerable to scams or exploitation. Always tell someone where you are going if you’ve been booked for a job, and use common sense when it comes to money or shady characters.

Never accept work from social media or be lured into a Skype chat. Get to know the company before agreeing to be photographed. It’s just not worth risking your safety and reputation by a false judgement. Young, new models are heavily targeted. Be careful.

modelling-career

There Are a Lot of Ups and Downs

There may be a lot of pressure to conform to or maintain a certain image. Eating disorders and other pressures are a reality. It’s important to keep on top of your health and mental wellbeing.

Rejection is a big part of a modelling career, whether you’re experienced or brand new to it. You need to try to learn not to take it personally!

On many occasions there are not enough modelling job openings for the amount of hopefuls desperately wanting to make it as a model. Persistence and a positive attitude are key to keep trying after rejection.

What Are Insta-models?

Building a following on Instagram is very important to a models success in a contemporary world. Brands and potential clients now look to social media profiles to see how they can boost their sales by using a popular model.

Creating a professional yet fun grid is a new way for models to maintain a successful career. Fans love to see an insight into a models life through Instagram stories and images. Behind the scenes at fashion week, music videos and fashion magazine shoots are really popular. Make sure you create a balance of quality, playfulness and professional to build followers and ensure that designers take you seriously.
