New Models Must Control their Nerves

  • Amy Bebbington

New models feel scared and nervous as the industry is fiercely competitive. As with any new experience or job role nerves begin to creep in, which is completely expected. Yet if you seriously wish to break into the field it is important that you combat these feelings to ensure that they do not obviously show in front of competitors and employees. Using this nervous energy and projecting it as confidence is a difficult task for new models yet if you persist and gain lots of experience it will become easier.

It is important to not let your emotions show on the outside when at a shoot or fashion show. Nerves usually present themselves through excessively shaking, sweating or crying, which cannot appear when at an important job role. The desired shot will not be captured with a model who is in this kind of state or temperament. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to control these nerves to ensure that your career develops smoothly and you are deemed confident enough to complete the role.

Clients will expect a new model to be a little nervous yet will still require an individual to perform so the itinerary runs to schedule. Do not put too much pressure on yourself as this will increase your nerves. It is important to remember that everyone makes mistakes and a wrong pose or facial expression will not cost you the job. Listen carefully to what is asked of you and act upon it by giving yourself time to process the information. Never freeze and panic as this will look unprofessional and will not make a good first impression.

Confidence and self assurance is particularly significant that develops over time. Do not be too hard on yourself as even top models such as will feel nervous in a new situation yet have learnt to always have an easygoing and enthusiastic attitude and approach to each task. Cara Delevingne will have been unsure when posing for the cover of Vogue or Kate Moss would have been nervous when first appearing in Harper’s Bazaar yet are professional and deal with their emotions calmly.  A client will prefer to see a model with a positive attitude that attacks all expectations head on rather than backing away. A timid and shy model will not succeed far as meeting new people and performing in front of them is a regularity.

Unfortunately, there are many harsh critics and experts who sit in high places in the modelling industry. For young aspiring models these professionals can be intimidating and off putting to begin with. Yet ensure that you do not be treated unfairly and stand your ground if you feel that you are right. Act in a dignified way rather than retreating and avoiding them as their persona could either be an act or a bad reputation that is not true; as let’s admit rumours do explode in the industry. For emerging models who are trying to establish themselves top professionals who have your future in their hands are difficult to act yourself around. It is important to balance a mixture of politeness, confidence and friendliness without being arrogant, shy or too eager. As you begin to connect and interact with professionals more projecting the right image and how comfortable you are allowed to be will become apparent.
