Modelling Size Requirements: Discussed at Downing Street

  • Amy Bebbington

Modelling size requirements are being forcefully challenged by seeking help from No.10. Are you becoming increasingly worried about the size of models on the runway? Does their weight shock, scare and concern you? Rosie Nelson can no longer allow for the issue to be constantly addressed yet ignored simultaneously bringing a petition to Downing Street. The courageous, inspirational model has decided to take on the issue single handedly and can no longer bear for the injustice to continue.

Rosie’s petition signatures has reached an impressive 113,000, which demonstrates how many individuals agree with her opinion. The passionate model firmly believes that it is impossible to live a healthy lifestyle whilst under the pressure of fashion industry expectations; blaming modelling agencies directly responsible for neglecting their duties of looking after the well being of their models.

Reaching for her personal experience Rosie explains: “When I went into the modelling agency in London, they said ‘we think you have great potential, we just need you to lose weight.’ So I went away, lost some weight, came back to see them a few months later and they said ‘you’re doing well, we just need you to lose more weight and we need to go down to bone.’ – most likely a shocking revelation used countless times!

It became evident that Rosie could not keep up with their demands to loose weight. The extreme dieting and crazy exercise routine became too much as she began to hurt her body putting her health at risk. Ms Nelson asks for a change in the law, which calls for models to have routine health checks to avoid young individuals becoming excruciatingly thin and igniting body issues. Rosie makes a valid comparison to labour workers who are asked to provide a health certificate yet models are not although the role is physically demanding. The document will provide that they are healthy enough to work and if their modelling agency is asking for more weight lose they will be doing it responsibly by visiting the doctor for advice. Do you think this is a good idea to tackle unrealistic modelling size requirements?

France, Italy and Israel have already addressed the issue with models having to calculate a minimum Body Mass Index (BMI) to be able to grace the catwalk. A fantastic idea that has not yet been adopted by the British Fashion Council insisting that the BMI is not a precise measurement. The pressure that young hopefuls face to enter the modelling industry is wrong with the strong message that they must lose weight to be successful. With many eager to impress they do adopt an unhealthily lifestyle that is transferred to a mass of teens when reading magazines witnessing the unrealistic figures in fashion campaigns and runway shots. It is a worry that many innocent minds will react to this by dieting and furiously exercising bringing body issues to the surface. We hope the petition does work and No.10 does react as a diverse range of body sizes should be welcomed by the fashion industry. Modelling size requirements need to be a healthy, realistic size that does not call for extremeness.
