Modelling Competitions: The Lowdown
Modelling competitions are becoming very popular in the industry for models just starting out. There are modelling competitions online and also in prestigious magazines. Often, brands will also run such contests in order to scout new faces. Sometimes, they’ll find a real undiscovered gem!
It’s true to say that modelling competitions are nothing new. After all, American-style beauty pageants and contests like Miss World have gone on for years. Although the focus is not always on modelling, obviously this kind of prize opens doors to that world, because the focus is also on the aesthetics.
You’ve also most likely heard of televised contests such as America’s Next Top Model and Britain’s Next Top Model. These are usually people who’ve made a career out of competition modelling, and they’ll most likely see some success even just by appearing in the show!
What Are The Pros & Cons Of Modelling Competitions?
Modelling competitions can open doors for people, but they can also promise some things in certain instances which they can’t deliver. We’ve devised a list of considerations for you to think about!
PROS
- Entering modelling competitions gives you the chance to be seen by brands, agencies or magazines. As they say, you’ve got to be in it to win it, and this is one great way.
- There are lots of different ‘niche’ modelling competitions. That way, if you don’t fit the conventional model appearance of tall and slim, you can have a chance at competing on a level more accessible to you. There are competitions for plus-sized models, petite models, child models and all kinds.
- You might be able to influence the judges with aspects not related just to your looks. Some will require you to have additional talents or allow you to shine in other ways. Who knows, they might spot a spark!
CONS
- A lot of social media style modelling competitions rely on votes from others on social media in the initial stages. This can be negative for a few reasons – namely because they’re clearly more interested in their own engagement statistics on social media, and also because it turns into a popularity contest. This can be very easy to game.
- Some competitions will charge money upfront to enter. These are not legitimate nor are they looking after your best interests.
- When modelling competitions are open to everyone, that means you may be up against lots of other people with equally good potential as you and similar attributes. Your chances might be low and you shouldn’t get your hopes up too much.
