Amateur Models: Why Do They Do It?
Amateur models are not paid for their time, however, there are many benefits to this kind of modelling. It’s a great way to step into a very difficult industry, and to start making a name or even a portfolio for yourself.
Professional models are paid, whereas amateur models often work ‘Time For Print’. This is industry speak, meaning that they are paid in prints from the shoot in return for their time. It works quite well for photographers who are trying to build up their portfolio, too, so it’s mutually beneficial.
Getting Started
So, where do amateur models find shoots and get started? There are loads of sites designed to help models, photographers, make up artists and others in the industry to meet one another and collaborate. Just get online!
Model Mayhem, PureStorm, Purple Port and Gumtree can all have some great people to work with.
Be Careful!
Although amateur models typically have a great experience and get a feel for the industry, there can be a few downsides. You have to be very careful, as you can be open to exploitation. Just use common sense when starting out, for example, try and take someone along to a shoot, or at least tell someone where you’ll be going. A joint photoshoot with two amateur models can be loads of fun, for example! If you’re applying for opportunities with people you don’t know personally, always be sensible.
Who Does It… And Why?
Of course, amateur models are everywhere right now. Whether you’re scrolling your Instagram feed, or simply walking around the local city centre high street, a lot of people have been caught up in the allure of posing, even if it’s only for selfies. But why not? If you’re confident and attractive, it can be fun to get a little bit of attention online or from your peers (providing you’re not caught up in your ego!).
You don’t need to go into unpaid modelling with the hopes of turning it into a real career eventually. It’s a really good hobby to build up some self-esteem, and there’s no shame in it at all!
Obviously, some amateur models dream of getting their foot in the door with a real, paying agency. Having this experience can be so valuable, and can ensure that you’ve got a higher chance of eventually being paid!
Good luck!
